The 7th Commandment of Cartooning

7. Thou shalt..use your own body as a reference for drawing hands, bodies and facial expressions.

This is a great one and I use my own hands all the time for reference. Sometimes you can’t always find a quick reference for an exact position when you need it. What to do? Use your own hands! Whether you’re drawing a cartoon figure with white gloves or drawing realistic hands for a comic or illustration it totally helps solve most problems with hands and upper torso positioning. Take a picture of your hand if you need to, but I find you just need to give them a look a few times only to get that position you need.

I really think using your own hands for drawing complicated hand positioning is underused. In the future, I'll make a video on it as either a separate series or part of the Burne Hogarth Anatomy series on my channel.

What do you guys think? Have you ever used your own hands or posture in the mirror to draw a figure.

As always check out my new YouTube channel 10-Second Cartooning for regular videos and if you’re already a subscriber, I say thank ya.

This video shows me taking a lesson from Burne Hogarth’s Dynamic Anatomy.
