The Final 10th Commandment of Cartooning

10. Thou shalt..stop being a perfectionist.

This one can be a tough one for beginning artists to come to terms with. How often do you keep working on a drawing until you get every detail, every crosshatch, if you crosshatch? More importantly, does needing the drawing to be perfect to keep you from actually finishing it? Do you finish every drawing? Sometimes I have trouble finishing a one-off drawing unless it’s part of an actual comic. There’s always another page and always another drawing to do so if you don’t get it right, don’t worry, take a break, use a wooden posture doll for reference and come back to it later refreshed. Also, there's nothing wrong then just calling it quits to that one drawing and starting a new one. You can always come back to it later if you want to finish it.

What do you think? Are you a perfectionist?

That’s the end of the Commandments of Cartooning. Thanks for reading these, I thought it was a good exercise for me and hopefully made you think about your own drawing habits.
